CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCEMENT

ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM

FOR 2024 ACADEMIC YEAR

PH.D. IN ECONOMICS

 

Chiang Mai University invites qualified candidates to apply for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Economics for the 2024 academic year. This is an international quality English-language program.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Hold a Master’s degree in Economics or related fields such as Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Agricultural Economics, or any other related to Quantitative Methods etc.

  2. Demonstrate official proof of English proficiency with either the TOEFL score minimum ITP: 523 or the IELTS score minimum 5.5 or CMU TEGS score minimum 65 (for more information, see 4.5). The score should be no more than two years old. Applicants should possess sufficient competence in English to receive instruction in English.

  3. Supply copies of one to three published research papers or reports (if possible by email attachment, if not by mail), and minimally the abstract of the Master’s thesis.

  4. Have competence in using statistical software or data-related programming.

  • PROGRAM ARRANGEMENT

The Economics Ph.D. program, Plan 2(1), is a system consisting of two components altogether making up 83 credits. The first component is 47 credits of coursework to be followed by the second component which is 36 credits of dissertation research. There will also be a qualifying examination and comprehensive examinations which include two field examinations. The time required in the program from initial enrolment to graduation is three years.

 

More specifically, each doctoral student must complete at least 47  credits  of coursework and 36 credits of research, for a total of 83 credits. 35 of the 47 course credits are allocated to 13 required courses, 11 courses are of 3 credits each plus two seminar courses (1 credit for each seminar), to be taken in 1.5 years as the basis for the qualifying examinations. The four remaining courses, two in each field, are also the subjects of two field examinations to be taken during the second year of the program (see  https://intermasterecon.wixsite.com/phdeconcmu).

 

All the great speed of the program and the need to schedule intensive teaching modules by internationally acclaimed foreign professors mean that there is only one entry dates per year into the Ph.D. program: June, 2024 for the first semester of 2024 academic year. Coursework for all students entering that year's cohort begins on that date in any given year.

  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE

There are two rounds of admission for the semester 1/2024;

The First Round of the admission process is between November 13, 2023 – January 15, 2024, and the deadline for applicants to apply for admission will be on January 15, 2024; and applicants will be informed of the acceptance decision no later than February 29, 2024.

The Second Round of the admission process is between January 16 – April 22, 2024, and the deadline for applicants to apply for admission will be on April 22, 2024; and applicants will be informed of the acceptance decision no later than May 31, 2024.

  • APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

Applicants are required to submit the following documents (all documents need translation into English only).​

1.   Copy of official undergraduate’s degree transcript and, stamped by the Registrar of the University.

2.   Copy of official undergraduate’s degree diploma and, stamped by the Registrar of the University.

3.   Copy of official Master’s degree transcript and, stamped by the Registrar of the University.

4.   Copy of official Master’s degree diploma and, stamped by the Registrar of the University.

5.   Copy of official proof of English proficiency with these following minimum score (within two years old);

  • CMU-eTEGS 65 or

  • CU-TEP 65% of full score or

  • TU-GET 65% of full score or

  • KU-PET 65% of full score or

  • IELTS 5.5 or

  • TOEFL, ITP: 523 or CBT: 193, or IBT: 69

6.   Three letters of recommendation from former professors or employers (one of which must be from a direct supervisor). Please see the form on the website (www.econ.cmu.ac.th).

7.   Completed online application forms from the Graduate School website http://www.grad.cmu.ac.th/admissions/

8.   Curriculum Vitae

9.   Statement of intent or interest of up to three pages (Times New Roman 12-point one-and-a-half spaced). This statement should contain three major sections:

  • The purpose of application to the program.

  • Research field of interest.

  • Career path after graduation.

10.  Permission letter from a current supervisor from your organization to join the  Ph.D. program for three years on a full-time basis. (if any)

11.  Affidavit of financial support form (if any)

12.  Confidential bank statement (if any)

13.  Two pages of executive summary of the Master’s degree thesis

14.  Copies of published research papers or reports (if possible by email attachment, if not by mail.), if you have done any.

All documents received by Chiang Mai University will not be returned.

  • ADMISSION CRITERIA

The Selection Committee of the graduate program will consider academic performance, references and qualifications among criteria for assessing each applicant. The applicants are expected to have an interview with the program committee upon request.

  • TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Tuition fees for doctoral program will be enforced in accordance with Chiang Mai University’s regulations. Ph.D. student must pay tuition fees in a package of 250,000 baht per year for three years. Students who can not complete the program within three years or those who want to drop some courses must pay the retention fee of 10,000 baht per regular semester and 5,000 baht per summer. Tuition fees can be divided into two payments, 125,000 baht for each semester.

  • NOTIFICATION

The Graduate School and the Faculty of Economics will notify successful candidates by February 12, 2024 for the First Round, and May 23, 2024 for the Second Round.

  • ACCEPTANCE OF ADMISSION

If you wish to accept your offer, please confirm your acceptance of an offer by submitting a filledacceptance form to email, fax or letter expressing their intention to join the program, no later than February 29, 2024 for the First Round, and May 31, 2024 for the Second Round; upon receiving their acceptance letter.

  • ENROLLMENT

To enroll, the student must provide the Registration Office with the following evidence:

  1. Notification from office of International Program, Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University

  2. Three 1-inch square photographs of I.D. type taken not more than six months

  3. Two certified copies of the student’s passport

  4. A medical certificate

  5. Original official master’s degree transcript

  6. The tuition fee 125,000 baht on the enrollment date

 

The enrollment date for the First Round will be on March 6, 2024, and the Second Round will be on June 12, 2024.
