CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCEMENT

ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM

FOR 2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

PH.D. IN ECONOMICS

 

Chiang Mai University invites qualified candidates to apply for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Economics for the 2025 academic year. This is an international quality English-language program.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Educational Background: Hold a Master’s degree in Economics or related fields such as Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Agricultural Economics, or any other field related to Quantitative Methods.

  2. English Proficiency: Demonstrate official proof of English proficiency with a minimum TOEFL score of ITP: 523, IELTS score of 5.5, or CMU eTEGS score of 65. The score should be no more than two years old. Applicants must possess sufficient competence in English to receive instruction in English.

  3. Research Experience: Supply copies of one to three published research papers or reports (if possible by email attachment, if not by mail), and minimally the abstract of the Master’s thesis.

  4. Technical Skills: Have competence in using statistical software or data-related programming.

  • PROGRAM ARRANGEMENT

The Economics Ph.D. program, Plan 2(1), consists of two components totaling 83 credits:

       - Coursework: 47 credits, including 13 required courses (35 credits) and four field-specific courses (12 credits).

       - Dissertation Research: 36 credits.

Students must complete the coursework within 1.5 years, followed by qualifying and comprehensive examinations, including two field examinations. The program duration from initial enrollment to graduation is three years. (see more details https://intermasterecon.wixsite.com/phdeconcmu).

  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE
    First Round: November 21, 2024 – January 15, 2025 (results by February 24, 2025 via email notification)

       - Second Round: January 16 – March 19, 2025 (results by May 13, 2025, official announcement)

  • APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

Applicants are required to submit the following documents (all documents must be translated into English):

      1.    Copies of official undergraduate and Master’s degree transcripts and diplomas, stamped by the Registrar of the University.
     2.    Official proof of English proficiency.
     3.    Three letters of recommendation from former professors or employers (one must be from a direct supervisor).
     4.    Completed online application forms.
     5.    Curriculum Vitae.
     6.    Statement of intent (up to three pages) including the purpose of application, research field of interest, and career path after graduation.
     7.    Permission letter from the current supervisor (if applicable).
     8.    Affidavit of financial support (if applicable). 
     9.    Confidential bank statement (if applicable).
     10.    Two-page executive summary of the Master’s degree thesis.
     11.    Copies of published research papers or reports (if any).
All documents received by Chiang Mai University will not be returned.

  • ADMISSION CRITERIA

The Selection Committee will consider academic performance, references, and qualifications. Applicants are required to attend an interview (will be announced later).

  • TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

     1.    Tuition Fees: 125,000 baht per semester for six semesters (three academic years). Students who cannot complete the program within three years or wish to drop some courses must pay a retention fee of 10,000 baht per regular semester and 5,000 baht per summer.

  • NOTIFICATION

Successful candidates will be notified by February 24, 2025 via email, for the First Round, and May 13, 2025, by university announcement for the Second Round.

  • ACCEPTANCE OF ADMISSION

To accept the offer, candidates must confirm their acceptance by submitting a filled acceptance form via email, fax, or letter by February 28, 2025, for the First Round, and May 30, 2025, for the Second Round.

  • ENROLLMENT

To enroll, students must provide the Registration Office with the following:
      1.    Notification from the Office of International Program, Faculty of Economics.
      2.    Three 1-inch square photographs (I.D. type, taken within the last six months).
     3.    Two certified copies of the student’s passport.
     4.    A medical certificate.
     5.    Original official Master’s degree transcript.
     6.    Tuition fee payment of 125,000 baht on the enrollment date.

Enrollment dates:

     - First Round: the same date as the Second Round

     - Second Round: May 21, 2025
