The Economics Ph.D. program, Plan 2(1), is a system consisting of two components altogether making up 80 credits. The first component is 44 credits of coursework to be followed by the second component which is 36 credits of dissertation research. There will also be a qualifying examination and comprehensive examinations which include two field examinations. The time required in the program from initial enrolment to graduation is three years.

 

More  specifically,  each  doctoral  student  must  complete  at  least  44  credits  of course work and 36 credits of research, for a total of 80 credits. 32 of the 44 course credits are allocated to 12 required courses, 10 courses are of 3 credit each plus 2 seminar courses (1 credit for each seminar), to be taken in 1.5 years as the basis for the qualifying examinations. The four remaining courses, two in each field, are also the subjects of two field examinations to be taken during the second year of the program 

 

All the great speed of the program and the need to schedule intensive teaching modules by internationally acclaimed foreign professors. Coursework for all students entering that year's cohort begins on that date in any given year.

 

Over 50 professors provide a rigorous, varied, and in-depth pattern of instruction in both the core required courses and the 9 fields of specialization. The foreign professors come to Chiang Mai to teach intensive courses on a modular basis (four to six weeks) based on their recent teaching and research in their universities.

In addition, other national and international organizations provide financial support and expert advice to the program.
